"Traces of the past in the present. Young Lithuanian and Ukraine art."
Both countries (Lithuania and Ukraine) have had similar historical
experience while being incorporated into Soviet Union. Because of different
nowadays political, economical and social background features the soviet
legacy manifests differently, but it exist one way or another. Its traces,
marks and residual parts occur in people’s consciousness, urbanistics and
mode of life in general: home interior, old souvenirs, antique photo albums.
Signs and symbols of the past experience are being transformed and occur
newly in consumer culture. It mixes with nowadays reality and becomes
Thus it is interesting how young artist, born in soviet regime, but matured
and created in free post-soviet country, perceives, feels, understands,
imparts or criticizes them. What is the meaning of them. What they become
in reality. And are those experiences, manifestations and transformations
different or similar comparing the young art of both countries.
One will talk about our past from Soviet Union time traces in inhabitans
mentality, other in urbanism, other in consumerism and
the last one in the mode of life (in the interiors of flats). All artist are
young, born from 1975 till 1983.
